Fences

The photographer Lim Sokchanlina is part of a group of young Cambodian artists who are taking on contemporary social and cultural issues in their work. The above picture is from his series 'Wrapped Future.' I like that these photographs are on one level a rather austere exploration of the kaleidoscope of textures that make up street-level Phnom Penh, and on another level draw attention to the way that the city's space is increasingly being privatized. With both archival and artistic impulse, Lim repeatedly photographs these temporary partitions at especially contentious sites, seeking to provoke questions about real and representational borders, their physical and psychological ability to divide public and private, past and future, known and unknown.
